Dr Lynch said mini egg treats can be a deadly treat for small kids and pleaded with Irish parents to keep them away from their tots.

Dr Lynch said a toddler’s airway is about the same width as a pen, meaning mini eggs can easily get lodged in place there.

The eggs are small, round and hard so can easily obstruct the airway and lead to choking.

The paediatrician said: “We take great care cutting up grapes and cherry tomatoes, but these little eggs can prove deadly.”

Never-ending job

Busy mum hailed for sharing ‘most relatable cleaning video ever’

Sharing the message on social media, the doctor held a mini egg and a biro pen to show just how easily the chocolate could lodge in a child’s trachea.

She said the eggs, though delicious, can be deadly.

Dr Lynch said: “It’s mini eggs season. These things are delicious. They’re also rock hard and they can completely block your toddler’s airway.”

She continued: “Your toddler’s airway. Their trachea is about four millimeters in diameter, so about the width of this biro here.

“If you look at the size and shape of a mini egg, you can see that it is the perfect size and shape to completely block.

“These things are a major choking hazard.

“We are really careful with grapes and cherry tomatoes and cutting them up small, but these things are so cute and so delicious and we get so excited about them that we sometimes forget that they can be deadly.

“Please don’t give these types of sweets to children under the age of five.”

Dozens of parents commented below the doctor’s warning, thanking the expert for the life saving advice.

One person said: “Wow never thought an airway was that small thank you for sharing possibly saving many lives!”

Another said: “Scary..thanks for sharing”.

And a third said: “I actually bought these and never thought of choking hazard”.
